8 prop ideas for your senior session

Bringing props to your senior session really allows you to show your unique personality and tell the story of who you are.  I thought I’d collect some different prop ideas you might want to consider bringing to your senior session.  Try one or all, it’s totally up to you of course!  🙂

Here are my top 8 favorite prop ideas for your senior session!

1. Class Ring

If you have a class ring, this is a great prop to bring to your session – you’re likely wearing it anyway.  🙂

I usually like to get a photo of it on its own and also on your hand, so be sure to have it cleaned before your session. You can do this at home with a soft brush (I use an old kids’ toothbrush for my rings at home) and gentle soap and warm water.  🙂

You’ll also want to make sure your hands and nails look their best for their close up.  This can be as simple as making sure you have lotion on your hands so they don’t look dry. You can also go all out and do a manicure – totally up to you and what fits your personality.

2. Band Instrument

If you’re in band, including your instrument is a great way to bring your individual personality into your senior photos.

It’s a good idea to look your instrument over and make sure it’s clean and if you want to polish it up a bit, that doesn’t hurt. You want it to look its best just like you. 🙂

Even if you’re not in the school band, but just play an instrument for fun this would be a great time to get some photos of you with your instrument!

3. Letter Jacket

Your letter jacket does more than keep you warm at chilly football games.  It is also a very personal item that shows your name and accomplishments.

Plus it’s a really easy piece of clothing to just toss on or take off, so we can easily incorporate it into different backdrops which adds more variety to your session.

Let’s include it in your senior session!  Again, you might check it over for dirt or hair, just so it looks the best possible.  🙂

4. Special momentos

Haven High Senior girl Session

Your senior photos should reflect who you are, and including things that are special to you or have sentimental meaning can help tell your story just that much better.

You may not have a Girl Scout vest full of fun patches, or a boat like Kaley brought to her session.  But you could include a special bible like Mariah did. The one she’s holding is her dad’s and is well-loved which is very special to her.

Maybe you have a jacket that your dad always wore or maybe you’re a photographer yourself and you’d like to bring your camera to get some photos taken while you’re holding it.  Either way, there’s really no wrong answer (and if you don’t have anything, that’s ok too).

5. Friend

So this idea is different from the others, but hear me out!  🙂

If you have a best friend or you’d like your mom to be included in a few photos, let’s do that!  It’s fun to have a friend around at your session anyway, and they’re someone special to you so they should be involved in this big fun day! 🙂

Just like your letter jacket and class ring, just make sure your friend is clean before your photo session.  😉

You can have them coordinate clothes with you and it’ll look even better!

6. Car/Truck, etc

If you have a car, truck, motorcycle, or even bicycle that you’re proud of and want to have included in your photos, bring it along!

Do you sail like Kaley?  Let’s go to your boat and take some photos with it!

As a High School senior you probably spend a bit of time in your vehicle so let’s get some photos of you in it, around it, etc.

7. Pet

Do you have a special pet you’d like to include in your senior session?  I would love that!  I know how important pets are and if we can have them at your session then let’s make that happen.

My only rules with pets at photo sessions is that they need to be fairly well-behaved (not a crazy barking boy like my dog lol).

If we’re photographing in a public place we’ll need to make sure we have someone to hold on to them (and clean up after them if needed) while you’re not having photos taken with your special fur baby.

That’s pretty much it!  🙂

8. Sports Accessories

Whether you’re in tennis, football, baseball, cheerleading, wrestling, you name it – I’d love to incorporate that into your session.

You’ve spent a lot of your high school hours practicing, training, and competing, so I think it’s great to include some photos with props that help tell the story of you playing your sport(s).  🙂
