Preparing for Your Wedding Photography Consultation

Preparing for Your Wedding Photography Consultation

Once you’ve decided on which photographer you’d like to have photograph your wedding, it’s time for the wedding photography consultation.  This is where you meet, tell them about your wedding day and decide if they’re the right photographer for you!

This often is also when you make decisions on package choices and sign the contract, if that’s the next step you want to take.  So I thought it’d be helpful to put together a little list of things to have in mind when you meet with your photographer.   This way you’re prepared and feel ready for the consultation.

First,

your photographer will probably want to hear more about how you met your fiancé, and how you got engaged. Details like these can help the photographer during the engagement session and on the wedding day.  Plus getting to know your personalities better helps your photographer decide if they will be a good fit for your day.  It’s possible that even though you’re awesome and the photographer is amazing, your personalities may just not click.  And that’s ok – you’ll be with these people the whole day and what is likely the biggest day of your life so far.  So make sure you’re a good fit on both sides.  🙂

Next

you’ll likely talk about the engagement session.  Some photographers offer this with every wedding package while others only offer it with some packages or as an add-on service.  Think about what you want and find out what your photographer offers.  Engagement sessions can be very helpful so that you get comfortable in front of your photographers camera, and they can get to know how you & your fiancé work best together.  This will all be so very helpful on your wedding day for both parties.  Plus, some photographers will offer a guest book/photo book that allows you to have a photo book from your engagement session out in place of a guest book at your wedding.  This makes a more personal guest book for you to have for years down the road.

Then

you’ll walk through what you envision for your day and your photographer will want to know things like…Lake Talbott wedding at Kansas State Fairgrounds for wedding photography consultation blog post

  • do you want photos of you & the groom getting ready?
  • will you want to do a first look?  (here’s why you do want a first look)
  • will your ceremony and reception be held at the same place?
  • what formal photos will you want from the day?
  • are there any special traditions happening on your wedding day?

Lastly,

your photographer will go through the contract & answer your questions.  If you know this is the photographer for you, you’ll sign the contract and pay the retainer fee that day.  Most photographers will not hold a date without both the signed contract and retainer.

Was this helpful?  I sure hope so!  Being a bride is something that most people don’t do more than once, so this is all new territory and knowing what to expect at your wedding photography consultation is usually so very helpful.
